Why Volunteer?

Every spring, thousands of toads, frogs, and newts migrate to their breeding ponds. Many are killed crossing roads. As a volunteer, you'll help these amphibians cross safely, contributing to local conservation efforts.

When We Patrol

  • Season: February to April
  • Time: Dusk until late evening (typically 6pm-10pm)
  • Conditions: Mild, damp evenings above 5°C
  • Commitment: Flexible - volunteer when you can

What You'll Do

  • Patrol designated road crossings during migration season
  • Safely collect and transport amphibians across roads
  • Record sightings and data for conservation research
  • Help maintain crossing signs and barriers
  • Share knowledge with other volunteers and the community

Requirements

  • Able to work outdoors in the dark and variable weather
  • Willing to follow safety guidelines and training
  • Access to a torch and high-visibility clothing
  • Comfortable handling amphibians with wet hands

Do I need experience?

No prior experience is needed. We provide full training on amphibian handling, identification, and safety procedures.

How much time do I need to commit?

Volunteering is flexible. You can patrol as often as you like - even one evening during the season helps!

Is it safe?

Yes! All volunteers receive safety training and wear high-visibility clothing. We also have public liability insurance.

Can I volunteer with friends/family?

Absolutely! Many of our volunteers patrol in pairs or small groups. Under-18s must be accompanied by an adult.
